The First Hour of Worship

  • Prelude

  • Quiet Moments for Silent Prayer

  • Scripture Sentences

  • Prayer

  • Hymn – “O Come and Mourn with Me Awhile”

  • Call to Worship

Pastor: Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?

People: Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto His sorrow.

Pastor: God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

People: Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.  Amen.

  • Invocation

  • Collect for Good Friday

Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.

Pastor: O Lord, open thou our lips.

People: And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Pastor: Praise ye the Lord.

People: The Lord’s name be praised.

  • Anthem – “God So Loved the World”

  • Prayer of Confession

Pastor: O God, in this hour of solemn remembrance we acknowledge with sorrow and shame that our sins are such as sent our blessed Lord to the cross.

People: Lord, have mercy upon us.

Pastor: We confess with penitence that we have been slow to accept that forgiveness of sins and cleansing from unrighteousness which, by His death, He sealed for us as the free gift of God.

People: Lord, have mercy upon us.

Pastor: We have not always entered into the fellowship of His sufferings, and have charged thee with indifference to sorrow and pain.

People: Lord, have mercy upon us.  Amen.

  • The First Word – Luke 23:34

  • Hymn – “Beneath the Cross of Jesus”

  • Prayers

All: O Lord, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offenses, that through thy bountiful goodness we may be delivered from the bonds of those sins which by our frailty we have committed.  May all who have sinned in ignorance, or are this day sincerely sorry for their sins, be given pardon and amendment of life.  Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our blessed Lord and Savior.  Amen.

  • Anthem – “Were You There”

  • The Second Word – Luke 23:43

  • Hymn – “Never Further than Thy Cross”

All: O Thou who art love, and who seest all the suffering, injustice, and misery which reign in this world; have pity, we implore thee, on the work of thy hands.  Look mercifully upon the poor, the oppressed, and all who are heavy laden with error, labor, and sorrow.  Fill our hearts with deep compassion for those who suffer, and hasten the coming of thy kingdom of justice and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

  • Silent Meditation

  • Prayers

Pastoral Prayer

All: O eternal God, who alone makest men to be of one mind in a house; help us, the members of this household, faithfully to fulfill our duties to thee and to each other.  Put far from us all unkind thoughts, anger, and evil speaking.  Give us tender hearts, full of affection and sympathy toward all.  Grant us grace to feel the sorrows and trials of others as our own, and to bear patiently with their imperfections.  Preserve us from selfishness, and grant that, day by day, walking in love, we may grow up into the likeness of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

  • The Fourth Word – Matthew 27:46

  • Hymn – “In the Hour of Trial”

  • Silent Meditation

  • Prayers

Pastoral Prayer

All: Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Savior, thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from thee.  May we not feel forsaken of thee, or shut out from thy love; but save us in all our mortal strife, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

  • The Fifth Word – John 19:28

  • Hymn – “O Love Divine, That Stooped to Share”

  • Silent Meditation

All: O Lord, increase our faith, renew our courage, and by thy Spirit make us victors over the things that beset us by giving our utmost to the highest.  May thy blessing rest upon all who give cups of cold water to others because they belong to Christ.   Show us that in every woe thou art still with us, that in every sorrow thou art still loving us, even unto the uttermost.  And may our faith stand firm in thy faithfulness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
